Eating Disorders & Disordered Eating Therapy

You dislike the way your body looks, and you limit how much food or calories you eat.

  • You use food as a way to cope with feelings of depression or anxiety.

  • When you overeat, you throw up or use other methods of purging the food or calories you consume.

  • You feel anxious about sticking to strict rules about what you eat and have unhealthy thoughts about eating.

Eating disorders happen when you have an unhealthy relationship with food, eating, and your body.

It is estimated over 30 million Americans suffer from an eating disorder. Eating disorders do not discriminate, they affect people of all genders, ages, ethnicities, religions, weights, and body types. However, they are most prevalent among women under the age of 35 and among athletes.

Unhealthy eating behaviors are a way to deal with other problems or uncomfortable feelings. For some, these unhealthy behaviors are a way to find power and control in their lives. Many people who suffer from disordered eating also have other mental health concerns like anxiety or depression. Living with eating disorders is difficult, and it can be embarrassing and scary to ask for help.

But the good news is eating disorders and disordered eating are treatable. You are not alone and Flourish Therapy Center helps. We have created a space where individuals can be authentically and openly talk about their relationship with food, self and society, supporting both the individual and their families, struggling with eating disorders and disordered eating.  We approach eating disorders from a lens of health at every size (HAES) and assist in getting you on the right path or living a healthy lifestyle.

Body Image Therapy

Having a negative or unhealthy body image may cause you to become preoccupied with what you may feel are physical flaws. It may cause you to develop a distorted perception of your physical features which may make you feel uncomfortable in your body. This is a very unhappy way to live and often leads to self-deprivation, dieting or unhealthy or addictive activities or regimes.

There is a way forward. Flourish Therapy Center can help you to realize and accept that this hatred is not about body size or shape, rather it is a way of blaming ourselves for what is not right in our lives. We’re here to uncover the roots of your insecurity and pursue a healthy body image, where you are comfortable with the body you have by accepting it, and committed to loving and caring for it. We are here to uncover the roots to your insecurity and help you pursue a healthy body image where you are comfortable with the body you have, accept it and committed to love and care for it.

Let Flourish Therapy Center help you to develop a healthier view of yourself and replace your negative internal voice with more positive perceptions.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy

When talk therapy alone is not enough to resolve the chronic symptoms left behind by trauma, EMDR can promote greater general wellness and significant decreases in trauma-related symptoms.

What is Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)?

EMDR is a powerful, effective, and safe method for alleviating the long-term psychological impact of traumatic experiences.  EMDR uses something called bilateral stimulation to help the brain resume its natural healing process. If our brains do not effectively process disturbing events, the memories can get “stuck” maladaptively in our brains, resulting in overwhelm, anxiety, depression, and other various symptoms.

By using bilateral stimulation (eye movements or tapping) while processing the stressful event, the brain’s normal healing process resume and the stress response is resolved.

Many studies and research have been completed on this approach, finding it to be safe and effective when administered by trained professionals. That’s why we make sure that Flourish Therapy Center’s practice team’s expertise includes administering EMDR, particularly in the treatment of psychological trauma.

We also offer EMDR Consultation Services to EMDR therapists looking to strengthen their skills, utilize the AIP model, and participate in case presentations. Individual and group consultation services available.
